FREE KINDLE E-BOOK ALERT: Divine by Joanna Traynor
Divine by Joanna Traynor
Ballsy heroine Viv is up in court on a drugs charge. She says to her lawyer when a guilty plea is proposed:
`I'm nineteen years old with a face like the back of a bus. My chances in the job market are nil and in the marriage market less than nil. Now do me a favour and listen up. I'm not guilty. OK? My liberty may not mean a great deal to you but it's all I have going for me. If that's the best advice you’ can offer me, you might as well sod off’.
You don't quietly tuck someone like Viv away for six months. She wants her day in court - the `due process' so often overridden by our criminal justice system by a politely negotiated guilty plea between a chummy judge and barristers.
Viv is disfigured. She takes drugs to numb the pain of having such limited prospects. Her brainy sister who lives in Paris feels perpetually guilty about the childhood accident that left half Viv's face permanently scarred. Viv also has a group of friends and enough drugs at university to keep self-pity at bay - so long as she isn't trapped in a corner, as she is now. This is her story.
